How Does the ORBERA® Non-Surgical Weight Loss Balloon Work?

Gastric balloon procedures, including the ORBERA® Non-Surgical Weight Loss Balloon, involve the insertion of a deflated balloon into a patient’s stomach through the mouth and esophagus. Once positioned, the balloon is inflated to roughly the size of a grapefruit with a sterile saline solution via a syringe. After six months, the balloon is deflated and removed. For a time period ranging from 6 to 12 months following the removal of the balloon, patients work closely with a team professionals to maintain lifelong weight loss through improved diet, fitness, mental health, and more.

During the initial procedure, patients are lightly sedated so as to remain comfortable during the insertion process. The procedure only takes about 20 to 30 minutes and, after a two-hour recovery period, patients are able to head home. It’s important that patients continue with regular check-ins and follow-up appointments during the time that the balloon is in place, as well as following the removal of the ORBERA® Non-Surgical Weight Loss Balloon.

Gastric Balloon Pros & Cons

As with any weight loss procedure, there are pros and cons to the gastric balloon. First, in order to be eligible for the procedure, you must meet certain criteria including but not limited to a BMI of between 30 and 40, an ideal weight loss of about 30 pounds, and an age of 22 or older.

Some of the pros of the ORBERA® Non-Surgical Weight Loss Balloon procedure include that it is:

  • Non-surgical
  • Minimally invasive
  • Relatively quick
  • Available to many
  • Affordable
  • Effective
  • Non-permanent

Patients who have the ORBERA® Non-Surgical Weight Loss Balloon tend to see a weight loss of about three times as much as weight loss achieved solely through diet and exercise.

That being said, there are some cons. These include:

  • Patients must commit to lifestyle changes in order to see results
  • Some patients have reported nausea and discomfort
  • There is a minor risk of the balloon deflation or leaking in the stomach
  • Proper eating/exercising habits must continue after the balloon is removed
