Gastric Banding in Central Florida

Adjustable Weight Loss Solutions

The laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band, more often known simply as the band, is a bariatric procedure that divides the stomach into two portions—a small, upper portion and larger, lower portion—with an inflatable band. Because the upper stomach portion is dramatically reduced in size, it helps promote feelings of fullness. This, in turn, typically leads to decreased calorie consumption. The level of satiety depends on the size of the opening between the upper stomach pouch and lower stomach portion. This opening is gradually reduced in size over time with repeated adjustments to the band itself.

What Are the Benefits of The Band?

There are many advantages to this popular weight loss procedure. Gastric banding does not require the surgical reconfiguring of the intestines, meaning recovery time is generally less than traditional gastric bypass surgery.

Some of the key advantages of gastric banding include:

  • Can result in 40-50% excess weight loss
  • Does not involve cutting of stomach/restructuring of intestines
  • Typically involves a shorter hospital stay (usually less than 24 hours)
  • Lowest rate of vitamin and/or mineral deficiency
  • Lowest post-op complication and mortality rate
  • Can be reversed and/or adjusted

That being said, gastric banding does carry with it its own set of downsides as well. Some of the disadvantages of this procedure include a slower, more gradual weight loss process, a greater chance of needing re-operation, and the slight risk of band slippage or erosion. Our surgeons can help you take a look at all the pros and cons of the Adjustable Gastric Band and determine if this is the right solution for you.
