In general, in order to qualify for our program, an individual must be considered to be “morbidly obese”, which usually means being overweight by approximately 100 pounds or more. Morbid obesity, as defined by the National Institute of Health, reflects the condition where an individual’s Body Mass Index (BMI) is 40 or greater, or a BMI of 35 or more that also includes significant obesity-related conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, etc.

We require that any patient interested in bariatric surgery from our program to participate first for a minimum of 4-16 weeks in the Weight Management program at Halifax Fitness Center. Participation in this program increases the likelihood of a good outcome if gastric bypass surgery is determined to be necessary.
Our objective is to encourage patients with clinically severe obesity to lose weight and maintain loss through conservative measures; to maintain beneficial adjustments in their lifestyle choices; and therapy, to improve their overall health. To ensure that patients who are considered for surgical intervention have been appropriately evaluated and treated and are appropriately selected based upon their risk to benefit ratio. |
